Day 28 - Puerto Montt, Chile

Friday, we stopped at Puerto Montt which is the capital of the Lakes Region of Chile. It is at the top of a fjord-like sound. Also in port today was another Holland America ship - the Oosterdam.  This is another tender port.

This area was first developed by Germans and there is still a heavy German influence.

Our excursion today was "Petrohue Cascades $ the City of Roses", We drove north of  Puerto Montt to the city or Puerto Varas which sits on Lake Llanquihue  then east to see the Petrohue Falls which is fed  by melting ice/snow from the nearby  Osorno Volcano. The are a number of active volcanos in this region. The highest is Osorno (8701 ft high) which last  erupted in 1869. The other is the Calbuco which is easily seen from Puerto Montt  last erupted in 2015 and is  6611 ft tall.It was very crowded today because there   had been a holiday last week and there as was street festival gong on and it wasn't raining which it does a lot here..
