Day 26 - Isla Ribinson Crusoe, Chile

Wednesday, our port of call was   Robinson Crusoe Island. This island is part of the Juan Fernandez Archipelago and is 416 miles off the Chilean coast of which it is a  part of.  It;s area is 18.5 sq miles. Daniel Defoe's novel "Robinson Crusoe"  is based in the story of  Alexander Selkirk's 4 year and 4 month marooning on this island in 1704 to1709.

The island's main town is San Juan Batista has a population of about 850. We anchored in the Cumberland Bay and tendered to the pier.. It was raining lightly when we arrived so we waited a couple of hours before we went ashore. We walked around for awhile then Kathy went back to the ship I did some exploring.

I knew nothing of this island before getting here. What a delightful surprise to get to this hidden gem. It is a relatively new volcanic island is sharp pointed peas. It is popular for diving and trail walking.
