Day 115 - Isafjordur, Iceland / Scenic Cruising of Isafjardurdjur

Monday our port-of-cal was the town of Isafjordur in the north-west part of Iceland. It has a population of about 2600.

Kathy did an excursion called "Arctic Foxes of Avalanches" and I did "Odd the Beaten Track: Cruise to Vigur Island" This island has a number of bird colonies on it.

Vigur is a privately owned Island with one farm

Our first Puffin who was sitting on a rock to greet us.

A Black Guillemt. There is a colony of them here

There is a colony of Arctic Terns here also

And a colony of Common Eiders

They server coffee and pastry








Eider down.  They pick it by hand from the nests after the eggs have hatched and the nests abandoned
. The hen sheds soft undercoat while nesting to insulate the eggs. Iceland produces at least 75% of the world's eiderdown production.
