Day 73 - Devil's Island, French Guiana


Monday, our port of call was Devil's Island - the old French Penal colony in French Guiana.  French Giana is on overseas department of France. There are 3 islands here which as a group is named Ilse du Salut,    We visited Royal Island (Ile du Royal) which was the administrative center of the penal colony 1853-1953. Devil's Island was featured in the Papillon movies (1973 and 2017).

Devil's Island is one of 3 islands in the Solitude Islands group in French Guiana.  We went ashore on Royal Island, No one is allowed on Devils Island (Ile du Diable).   Royal Island was the administrative center of the prison which operated 1853-1953.

Once we stopped and anchored. They used the thrusters to keep the ship in position
. They kick up sediment from the sea bottom.

Sailing away from Devis's Island. We now  sail  4 days east to the Cape Verde islands  off  the coast of Africa
