Friday, our stop was at the a small city of Alter do Chao. It sits on the bank of the Tapajos River which is a branch of the Amazon. It is a resort town with freshwater beaches and is a favorite of the people living in Santarem which is 22 miles north. We only had a short stop of 5 1/2 hours here. The forecast was for rain. Kathy and I decided to stay onboard today for a variety of reasons. We heard the the main beach was underwater because of the high level of the Tapajos river.
