Day 59 - Recife, Brazil

 Monday, our stop was the city of Recife which is the capital of the Pernambuco, It is known as the "Brazilian Venice" because of its numerous waterways and bridges. The name means "Reef"  in Portuguese. Recife has a population of 1.6 million and the greater Recife area has 4.3 million. There are sandstone reefs the protect the harbor. Recife was founded in. Our excursion was "Recife & Historic Olinda"

Olinda was the original capital of the state and was founded in 1553 by the Portuguese. It's early economy was based on sugarcane production. In  1630 the Dutch captured the city and held it until 1654.. It's decline lead to the rise of Recife. It was declared  a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Olinda means “Oh Beautiful”

Then we went to an old prison which has been converted into a Market Place



Then back to the port and our ship

I moved to the very back corner of the outside deck and was able to see the sun













We are scheduled to sail at 11PM. These are the last few passengers returning at all-aboard time of 10:30PM
