Day 57 - Salvador da Bahia, Brazil

 Saturday we were in Salvador in the Brazilian state of Bahia. It is the capital of the state.  It was the capital of colonial Brazil and was founded in 1549.. It has a strong African influence. It has a population of  of 2.5 million.  There  has a quick rainshower as we were sailing in but it was nice (and hot) the rest of the day. Our excursion was "Easy Salvador".

The Southern Cross - The Diamond shape group of 4 stars. The 2 brighter stars to the left are Alpha Centauri B and Hadar. Yhey always point to the top star in the Southern Cross







This was on the other side of yhr ship. It was picking up some of the sunrise color.

We drove past a park with a lake in it

These statues of African women are in the lake in a park. These orixás are divine spirits of the Yoruba religion of West Africa They are venerated in Umbanda and Candomblé, two Afro-Brazilian religions

We visited this Catholic church -Church of Our Lord of Bonfim 

The ribbons of the Lord of Bonfim are colorful ribbons that are tied to the fence around the Church of Our Lord of Bonfim in Salvador, Brazil. The ribbons are a traditional way to make wishes and are believed to bring good luck. 






Inside, there was a service in progress







A chapel with the room of miracles with wax skulls, arms, legs etc hanging from the ceiling and lots of pictures of happy people who have had their prayers answered


















Back to the bus












We drove along a beach area








We stopped to view the Barra Lighthouse which was build on top of an old fort in the 1690s









On our drive back to the port area

We stopped at a market for some shopping

The old city was on the hill and the lower area is on  land reclaimed from the sea

I photgraphed the sunset with my iPhone from our table in the main dining room. The sun shade screen was over the window and the window had streaks across it so pictures are not very good but I saw the sunset.
