Day 50 - Freemantle / Perth. Australia (Day 2)

 

On our second day in Freemantle / Perth, our excursion was "Convicts of Freemantle & the Maritime Museum".

The Fremantle Prison operated from 1860 until 1991. Britain maintained is a penal colony until 1886 then it was transferred to the colonial government. It was operated as a maximum security prison untin 1991.  It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010.

After we leave here, we have 7 days at sea accros the Indian Ocean  before we arrive at the island of Mauritius next Thursday.

Our first stop was at the Fremantle Prison. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A few cells had no light. prisoners' in there were in 23 hours a day.

The US Americas Cup boat that won in 1987 in Freemantle is housed here.



Jon Sanders sailed this yacht, Parry Endeavour  around the world 3 times nonstop in 658 days ending March 1988 nin Fremantle. He holds 15 world records for endurance and other unique achievements.

Royal Australian Navy  cold-war era submarine HMAS Ovens is undergoing facelift and makeover. It can only be viewed from a distance
