Day 31 - Nuku alofa, Tonga

Saturday we visited the island of Tongatapu in the Kingdom of Tonga which is composed of 176 islands.  Never colonized, Tonga claims on of the last pure expression of Polynesian cultures. It was a British protectorate and became independent in 1970. It is a member of the British Commonwealth. A category 4 tropical cyclone (hurricane) Gita   hit the island in Feb 2018. There are still many signs of the damage. The islands were called the Friendly Islands by Captain Cook and the name still applies
